Albemarle boys tennis clinches Commonwealth title

The Albemarle boys tennis team swept Riverbend 5-0 on Friday to win the Commonwealth District title. The Bears, who had upset Stafford in the semifinals, were no mach for the Patriots. Junior Lee Wilson recorded the fifth and deciding point to notch the match win.

“It was great to see Lee get the deciding point,” said coach Chip Grobmyer. “He has been struggling with his serve but was able to fight through it and defeat a very good athlete, Daniel Puig,” Coach Grobmyer said. “We’ll continue working with Lee to try and work out the kinks in his serve so he can be on top of his game during regional play.”

Puig was a forward for Riverbend’s basketball team.

Albemarle takes on Patrick Henry-Roanoke at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Northwest Region quarterfinals. The match will be played at Boar’s Head due to the high probability of rain predicted for early next week. Riverbend will represent the Commonwealth district as the No. 2 seed and travels to George Washington-Danville on Monday.
