Albemarle 74 secures spot in District 12 title game

Throughout the summer, Logan Forloines has been one of Albemarle Post 74’s biggest breakthrough players, and with his team tied against Spotsylvania Post 320 on Sunday afternoon in the bottom of the ninth, William Monroe’s rising junior came up with another clutch play, this time providing a game winning triple to score teammate Danny Morris in a 8-7 win.

Albemarle fought back from a 4-run defict in the bottom of the eighth to cut Post 320’s lead to one run. In the bottom of the ninth, Eli Haden got Post 74 going with a single and a pair of stolen bases before Danny Morris brought him home on an RBI single. Then with Morris on first, Forloines cranked a shot deep to centerfield that scored Morris to end the game. Andrew Kayliss picked up the victory on the mound in relief and pitched four shutout innings.

The victory secures Albemarle a spot in the district championship, as they are the only unbeaten team in the double-elimination tournament. Post 74 has Monday off and will await their opponent with Jason White likely to earn the start on the rubber. Albemarle will have to win one of the two potential games in the championship to earn a repeat trip to the state tournament in Danville next week.

Earlier in the day, Orange Post 156 eliminated Fluvanna Post 2003 with an 11-5 win with a complete game victory from pitcher Snooter Merryman.
