Western volleyball sweeps Fluvanna

Fluvanna County’s volleyball team is banged up, with injuries forcing players to shift around and fill different roles, and on Thursday, they ran into an efficient, effective Western Albemarle team.

“We have been plagued with some injuries that have altered the chemistry on the court,” said Fluvanna coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett. “I think our girls played well but their offense was running all four cylinders or six cylinders, I don’t know that might be an eight-cylinder engine back there.”

Western’s engine was running at top speed from the opening serve and the Warriors swept Fluvanna 3-0, winning 25-16, 25-15 and 25-13.

“We’re back into a rhythm of playing strong teams, starting with Monticello and then Powhatan and tonight Fluvanna,” said Western’s Courtney Berry. “I think playing the better competition helps us to play up and just get into our rhythm.”

Berry led the Warriors’ attack with nine kills on the night and also finished with three blocks. Fluvanna’s front line couldn’t find an answer for Berry or fellow hitter Alema Atuaia, who finished with six kills and threw in four aces to boot. Atuaia gave the Warriors a serious jolt of energy.

“She always yells after she gets a kill and not a lot of people have that same fire that she does,” Berry said. “I think that’s a really key asset on our team.”

Olivia Nichols finished with four blocks and seven digs for the Warriors while Andrea Vial put together 16 assists. Adriana Bland also had a solid night with a team-high 10 digs as well as three aces.

Fluvanna got seven kills out of Christina Walker up front and three aces from Tyler Haislip.

Western will square off with Albemarle at home Tuesday while the Flucos will take on Powhatan on the road the same night.
