Western girls track wins Group 3A indoor track title

To win a Group 3A girls indoor track title, Western Albemarle’s squad needed just about every single point.

 

The Warriors edged out second place I.C. Norcom 94.5 to 86, driven by a strong relay performance a double title-winning day by Averi Witt.

 

Witt, senior, won the 1000 and 1600-meter runs, edging out a victory in the 1000 by just .47 seconds and the 1600 by .13 seconds over teammate Zoe Clay.

 

Clay, a junior, was the runner-up in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs while Madison Masloff won the pole vault for the Warriors.

 

In the relays, Western took fourth in the 4×200, third in the 4×400 and won the the 4×800 to pile up 21 points in just those three races.

 

A pack of other athletes scored points for the Julia Berg finished third in the 1000 while Faith Reid took eighth in the 500. Claudia Gioertz-Joergensen took sixth in 1000. Jenna Hill took sixth in the 3200. Kate de Jong scored twice, taking eighth in the 55 hurdles and seventh in the high jump. Katrine Berg finished fifth in the long jump and Katrine Berg took fifth in the triple jump. Nichole Heon took eighth in the long jump. Just being Masloff in the pole vault, Sarah Tolman took third and Melina Punsalan took eighth.

 

The Western boys took eighth as a team in the Group 3A championships, with Will Koester’s third in the 1000 meters helping the Warriors post that finish. Joe Hawkes took fourth in the 3200 for Western while Stuart Terrill took eighth in that race. The Warriors’ 4×800 team took fifth while

 

Jackson Smith was fifth in the pole vault and Cooper Saunders took sixth in that event.

 

Fluvanna County took eighth as a team on the girls side with Matasha Martin winning the state title in the 55-meter hurdles to lead the Flucos. Cyan Coates took eighth in the 300 and seventh in the 500. Fluvanna’s 4×800 team took sixth.

 

On the boys side, Zach Hartzog was seventh in the shotput.
