Western girls soccer powers past Waynesboro in conference semifinals

Western Albemarle’s girls soccer team wants to keep opponents moving, and the best way to accomplish that is to keep moving themselves.

“We do a really good job of switching the point of attack and just constantly moving,” said Western’s Jane Romness. “We may not get every shot but we do end up finishing.”

Tuesday night they got enough shots to roll to a 7-0 victory over Waynesboro in the Conference 29 semifinals, vaulting them into the conference title game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at home against Broadway.

The Warriors also earn a region tournament berth with the victory. They’ll need a title game win though to avoid a clash with the third-place team out of Conference 29 due to a quirk in the schedule.

Western led 4-0 by halftime, with their ball movement creating an array of shots and enough goals to take some pressure off the Western defense, who was playing without their usual starter Bailey Wood in net.

“They started to give less pressure as the half went on,” Romness said.

That decreased pressure also helped the Warriors’ offense as they continued to create chances in the second half with a patient, methodical attack.

“We are really successful when we play it through our backs and switch it through,” Romness said. “When opponents follow our backs, it creates space up top and new opportunities.”

When executed properly it also create balance. Abigail Zimmerman, Elizabeth Fabiano and Julia Berg each had two goals with Romness’ own goal rounding out the effort. Erin Meier checked in with three assists for the Warriors.

Western advances to the Conference 29 final where they’ll face Broadway before moving on to the Region 3A West bracket.
