Western boys win Jefferson District cross country title

It’s hard to be much more dominant than Western Albemarle’s boys cross country team was at Pleasant Grove Wednesday.

The Warriors rolled to a Jefferson District title behind a one-two-three-four finish by Joe Hawkes, Jack Eliason, Joseph Taylor and Cyrus Rody-Ramazani with Will Bonner’s ninth overall finish rounding out the Warriors’ scorers. Hawkes won the individual title with a time of 15:48.42.

Western’s 19 points well outpaced Louisa County’s 75 points. Albemarle finished third despite not running Harris Naseh, Cutter Huston, Will Mackenzie, Joe Yung or J.D. MacKnight, the Patriots’ top five finishers in the recent Albemarle Invitational that took second place in the highly competitive meet that included a fifth place finish by the Warriors.

Louisa’s Branden Wood was the highest on-Western finisher, clocking in at fifth place to lead the Lions’ runner-up effort. Will Krehmeyer took sixth for Monticello who finished fifth as a team, Ethan Pettyjohn took seventh for Orange who finished sixth and Gavin Timmons of Powhatan took ninth for the Indians who finished fourth overall. Louisa’s Matt Klapak took 10th overall for Louisa County to round out the top 10.

Regional races are the next step for these squads, with most of those events taking place next week.
