Western boys tennis begins title defense with win over Monticello

Western Albemarle’s boys tennis team started their Class 3 state title defense Friday with a sweep of Monticello Friday, rolling 9-0 over the Mustangs.

It was the first official appearance for the Warriors’ new No. 1 Gavin Segraves, who moved to the area from Atlanta. The junior is a four-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net and has verbally committed to the United States Naval Academy. Segraves replaces Daniel Thomas at the top of the lineup and along with defending state doubles champion Alex Ix at No. 2 gives the Warriors perhaps the best one-two punch at the top of the ladder in the area and one of the best in the state.

Segraves beat Monticello’s Andrew Weston 10-0 in his debut Friday while Ix beat Will Lee 10-0 at No.2. Jack Tribble and Nicholas Hagspiel also picked up 10-0 wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles while Simon Rader won 10-0 at No. 5 and Jack Selverstone won 10-0 at No.6.

In doubles, Segraves and Tribble won 10-0 for Western while Tommy Smith and Caleb Harris combined to win 10-3 at No. 2 doubles. Jack Magargee and Bryce Duncan combined to win 10-3 at No. 3 doubles and round out the sweep.

The Warriors will take on Charlottesville Tuesday while Monticello looks to bounce back the same day against Spotswood at home.
