Western baseball rolls past Charlottesville

A fast start helped spark Western Albemarle to an 11-1 victory over Charlottesville Tuesday night as the Warriors cruised past the Black Knights.

Western put up six runs in the first inning led by a Nathan Fink RBI double, a Devin Powell two-RBI single and Sims Sester’s bases loaded, bases-clearing triple.

The Warriors tacked on five more runs in the fourth, with Fink hitting a triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly and Landon Abrahamson cleared the bases with a double down the third base line. He then scored on an error to give Western a 10-run advantage. Devin Powell then closed the game by forcing a groundout in the top of the fifth to end it after putting a couple of runners on.

Abrahamson finished with four RBI on a 2-for-3 night in the eighth spot while Powell went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Fink’s 2-for-3 night with the double and the triple led the way offensively too.

Zakk Hodge picked up the win on the mound with 3.1 innings of work that included six strikeouts, three hits allowed and one walk. Powell finished with three strikeouts and just one hit in 1.2 innings of scoreless work.

Kason Thomas had the Black Knights’ lone RBI, scoring Tyler Williams, who hit a double to put himself in scoring position.  Williams went 2-for-3 on the day. Marcus Targonski and Dalton Richardson each also had hits for Charlottesville.

Western now squares off with Fluvanna County Thursday in a crucial Jefferson District showdown while Charlottesville will try and regroup Wednesday on the road against Nelson County.
