Western Albemarle baseball’s Domecq commits to Radford

For years, Western Albemarle’s Derek Domecq has traveled all over the Eastern United States playing baseball, looking for a chance to play at the college level. All that time, energy and effort was worth it when it paid off Thursday.

“All the five and six hour car rides with my parents and even with my little sister in the backseat sometimes,” Domecq said.

Domecq, a lefthanded pitcher, committed to Radford University, the reigning Big South champions who advanced to the NCAA regionals this spring. Domecq went 8-2 this season on the mound for the Warriors, posting an ERA of 1.16 while allowing just 10 walks and striking out 99 batters in 66.3 innings.

The Highlanders have won the Big South two of the last three years to earn the first two NCAA region tournament berths in school history and the opportunity to compete on that stage was a big drawing card for Domecq.

“I think that’s everyone’s goal or should be everyone’s goal,” Domecq said.

Domecq, who is also the Warriors’ quarterback during the fall, will stick with the sport that’s been his passion since he was young.

“I think playing baseball since I was five years old, that’s just been my dream to play Division I baseball,” Domecq said.

During what has been a long process navigating interest from a number of schools, Domecq got some solid advice from his older sister Christine who played women’s soccer at Lynchburg.

“She said go somewhere you would want to go without the sport and I think Radford is a place I’d like to go even if I didn’t play baseball there,” Domecq said

Domecq visited Radford before, but made the commitment Thursday while in Georgia at a showcase tournament while playing with the Evoshield Canes U-17 program. Domecq has competed in the tournament at Lake Point the last couple of years, making the All-Tournament squad as a pitcher and he’ll look to do it again this weekend.

This time though? He’ll be competing as a future Highlander.
