Warriors take Mustang Classic

With four of its top five players back in the fold after a fifth place finish in the Group AA tournament last year, the Western Albemarle golf team kicked off the 2010 golf season on a strong note with a top showing at the third annual Mustang Classic golf tournament hosted by Monticello at Spring Creek.

With a total score of 309, the Warriors edged Matoaca High by 11 strokes to take first place. Monticello, at 325, earned third place with Albemarle just two strokes behind in fourth at 327.

Coming at 1-over on the day with a 73, Alex O’Dell, last year’s Jefferson District player of the year, was the tournament’s medalist as he topped Kevin Clark of Cosby (Richmond) by one stroke. Teammates Brett Engle at 4-over 76, Scott Wakely at 6-over 78 and Landon Weis at 10-over 82 rounded out the top four for Western.

Michael Comer led the way for the Mustangs with his 5-over 79. After taking the season off last year, Kevin Archer is back playing for Monticello and finished one stroke behind Comer at 6-over 80. Tied at 11-over, Evan Childress and Austin Yoon contributed the other two scores for the Mustangs. Last season Childress earned at bid in the Group AA tournament as an individual while Monticello earned the second bid out of the JD to participate as a team in the Region II championship.

For Albemarle, Tony Liu was out in front with a 5-over 78. Three strokes behind Liu was Tayler Johnson at 9-over 81. Dylan Herold and Wilson Desimini came in with 11-over 83 and 13-over 85 respectively.
