Tuning up

Check out Fluvanna County’s sweep of the Athletes of the Week here.

Old man winter made a pretty good dent in the schedules across Central Virginia in December, but although this most recent storm was half the size, it looks to do twice the damage.

Most contests scheduled for tonight have been cancelled and with most teams already penciled in to play four games in a six day span, local Athletic Directors will meet to determine what course of action needs to be taken. All non-district opponents wounded up getting scratched last week to prepare for the storm. The VHSL requires that all district tournaments be finished by February 20th. Needless to say, the options are limited, so expect a jumbled schedule down the stretch.

One of those games that definitely will draw some interest is the Western Albemarle/Fluvanna County girls game scheduled for Friday night.

The Warriors are one of the few teams all season and the only team in the Jefferson District that has taken the Flucos down to the wire.

With both teams employing solid, hard-nosed defense, don’t expect a high scoring affair in Crozet. Fluvanna’s dynamic Loyd sisters, K-anna and Mia, only sparked the Flucos to a 34-point effort in the teams’ first meeting.

Western counters the Loyds, Sarah Ryan and Brianna Burrus with point guard Kelsey Swanson and a balanced frontline of Ellen Shaffrey, Carolyn Schneller and Raven Ward. That front line could potentially give Fluvanna some matchup problems, but Ryan has been consistent of late and should be ready to hold her own.

Barring a major upset outside the Western game, Fluvanna should be on its way to a regular season title. But Friday’s contest could go a long way in telling how far the Flucos can go this year.

Boys Top Five

1. Blue Ridge (13-3) — The Barons continue to hold the top spot and a blast of an exhibition game with No. 2 Madison looms this weekend.

2. Madison County (18-0) —The Mountaineers keep on rolling along, and after taking on Blue Ridge, a pair of clashes next week with district rival Clarke County will decide the Bull Run.

3.  Miller (6-4) — The Mavericks looked solid against Covenant with D’Andre Corbin managing the point well throughout the night and Mychal Parker putting on a show. Preston Terrell’s continuing emergence at shooting guard could become a big key for the Mavericks if they want to challenge for a state title.

4. Charlottesville (9-6) — A loss to Fluvanna was a big setback for the Black Knights, but if the weather will cooperate, they’ll soon get a chance to avenge that stumble.

5t. Fluvanna (10-7) — The Flucos win at home over Charlottesville’s vaults them into their first appearance in the top five this season.

5t. Western Albemarle (14-5) — Wins over Louisa and Monticello give Western a fighting chance at a top seed in the tournament, but they still need to keep winning and get a couple of more CHS losses.

Lurking — Albemarle (10-5), Covenant (11-4) and Buckingham (13-3)

Girls Top Five

1. Fluvanna County (16-1) — It’s the home stretch for the Flyin’ Flucos with the final four games of their regular season coming in a six day stretch – weather permitting of course. A sweep through the week means a clean sweep through the Jefferson District, an awfully impressive feat if they can pull it off.

2. Miller  (8-4) — With all the shakeups because of weather, the Mavericks enjoyed a light week. And although most schools begin the post season next week, Miller gets an extra seven days to prepare for the Blue Ridge Conference tournament.

3. St. Anne’s-Belfield (9-4) — There’s no doubt that the Saints will be eager to avenge their first loss of the season when they head to Collegiate. STAB has won seven of its last eight games.

4. Western Albemarle (13-5) — While the Warriors are going to need some help to catch the Flucos, it’s very possible that Friday’s showdown with Fluvanna won’t the be last time we see these two squads square off.

5. Orange County (11-7) — The Hornets won two of their three games last week with the one loss coming to the Flucos. Orange has the ability to make next week very interesting should they lineup with either Western or Fluvanna in the JD tournament.

Lurking — Covenant (7-7) and William Monroe (9-10)
