The Panel: The Top 10 Girls Soccer Players of the Decade

Welcome to the latest episode of The Panel, where with the help of sponsors like Blue Ridge School, Physical Therapy at ACAC, Taylor’s Auto Body and Mincer’s we’re going to dive into the Top 5 or Top 10 players in a certain sport or at a certain position in the classes of 2010-2020, the breadth of Scrimmage Play’s existence. Next up is the Top 10 (11) Girls Soccer players in the last decade in no particular order, with Bart Isley, Price Thomas, Amy Sherrill and Jake Desch serving as the panel. Hannah Keith, Monticello Class of 2016

Keith was an All-State defender for the Mustangs as a junior and senior. She was an incredibly strong backline defender who went on to become a three-year starter at William and Mary. 

 

Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper, Albemarle Class of 2017

Tyler-Cooper was the 2017 state player of the year as part of state title team, arguably the consensus top keeper in last 10 years and went on to be an All-Conference keeper at UNCG. 

 

Anna Sumpter, Western Albemarle Class of 2016

30 goals and All-State as a freshman, then Charlottesville coach Fernando Opere suggested she was “from the sky”, Injured the rest of her career. Eventually broke into rotation and then started at UVa. 

 

Leci Irvin, Tandem Friends Class of 2012

Irvin was the VISAA D2 State POTY in 2010 and 2012 and went on to be a third team All-CAA performer at William and Mary. Best player in Tandem’s program history.

 

Julia Berg, Western Albemarle Class of 2019

Berg was an extremely versatile player who went on to play at Hobart after winning three straight state titles while earning first team All-State twice. 

 

Carmen Thomas, Albemarle Class of 2015

Thomas was injured as junior, Second team All-State as a senior while scoring 18 goals, standout at James Madison.

 

Haley Kent, St. Anne’s-Belfield Class of 2014

Kent was the 2014 VISAA D1 State POTY as a center midfielder for the Saints while being named All-LIS and All-State three times. Was an All-CAA defender at William and Mary.

 

Jazzy Loredo, Albemarle Class of 2015

Loredo was the two-time JD POTY in 2014-15 and went on to play at Winthrop.

 

Fizzy Gonzalez, Albemarle Class of 2018

George Mason, part of 2017 Albemarle state title team and was state player of the year runner-up, was first team all-everything that year and finished her career at Jefferson Forest.

 

Sarah Grupp, Western Albemarle Class of 2014

A holding midfielder at Western, Grupp was also a two-sport athlete who also played ice hockey in college for Oswego State. Grupp was all-state and the Conference 29 POTY at Western.

 

Savannah Alexander, Albemarle Class of 2020

Now playing for Virginia Commonwealth University, Alexander was All-JD, All-State, 27 goals, 13 assists as junior, lost her senior year to COVID-19 pandemic cancellations but still finished as the Albemarle program’s most decorated player ever.
