Sometimes it just doesn’t matter where you’re seeded. A team can get hot at the right time, get the opportunity to fight to keep your season alive and suddenly a switch can flip.
Right now in the Region 3C tournament? The switch has flipped for the No. 10-seeded Monticello boys soccer squad.
The Mustangs went on the road Wednesday night and made short work of No. 3 seed Liberty Christian, rolling 3-0 to earn a state tournament berth and a spot in Thursday’s Region 3C championship game against Charlottesville.
A hat trick from Will Acgtblu accounted for all the Mustangs’ goals. He struck just 15 minutes into the match for his first, added a second shortly before the break and then added an insurance goal to complete the hat trick with 14:27 left in the second half.
Meanwhile, the Monticello defense held LCA scoreless, with keeper Brady Garrett registering the shutout.
The Mustangs defeated No. 7 seed Fort Defiance 5-0 to open the postseason, then beat No. 2 Turner Ashby 2-1 to keep it rolling in the Region 3C quarterfinals.
Now they’ll get a chance to keep a crazy run going Thursday night when they go toe-to-toe with a Charlottesville squad that the Mustangs fell to 1-0 back on May 19.
