Strong Return: Nelson re-enters Dogwood with win over Altavista

This one was a long time coming.

After five years without a Dogwood District win, Nelson County spent two years in exile as an independent program in part to try to get its footing so it could compete in the Dogwood, one of the state’s toughest Class 2 districts.

Early returns indicate that move two years ago worked.

For the first time since 2011, Nelson County won a Dogwood District clash, winning a 50-42 shootout with Altavista. It’s the first time since 2007 that the Governors (3-2) are 1-0 in Dogwood play.

“It’s a huge step for this program,” said Nelson County coach Matt Hicks. “We have a hard working group of young men that dedicated themselves to making a change and they took a big step forward in doing so.”

With 50 points, the Governors obviously had some things cooking offensively. George Brown rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns while throwing another touchdown while going 10-for-18 for 143 yards. He found Brice Wilson on most of those tosses with Wilson nabbing six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. Wilson also had five solo stops on defense.

“We executed our on offense throughout the evening,” Hicks said. “The defense came up big on key possessions throughout the game.”

Alex Duvoli and Kavin Carter each had eight tackles on the night, with Carter notching a pair of tackles for a loss. Brandon Jamerson came up with a sack.

Felix Rodriguez had 76 yards on the ground for the Governors and five tackles on defense. James Johnson, Aveon Tabb, Jamerson and Cole Koschara each had four tackles.

The Governors will look to make it 2-0 in the Dogwood Friday at home against Gretna, currently sitting at 3-1 on the year.
