STAB girls complete unbeaten run through LIS with win over St. Cat’s

St. Anne’s-Belfield girls basketball needed to find its flow again. It wasn’t there against Veritas earlier in the week and it hadn’t really been there for a few games.

But with Vanessa Woodfolk and Jada Bennett getting going early on senior night, the Saints seem to have found their flow again, cruising past St. Catherine’s 79-29.

“We definitely had a few rough games but Coach (Phil) Stinnie pushed us this week and it really helped us this game,” Woodfolk said. “It helped us work harder and made us focus more.”

The win wraps up an unbeaten run through the LIS regular season slate. They’ll be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming LIS tournament.

Woodfolk scored 10 of her 21 points in the first half and pulled down five rebounds while blocking two shots. Bennett scored a season-high and what appears to be a career high 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting, an explosive performance for a player who averaged 4.4 points per game.

“It was really exciting coming out and getting the big win,” Bennett said. “It’s a big win knowing that we end the LIS undefeated and we just want to keep going.”

The Saints employed their usual smothering full court defensive approach, with senior Jovia Winkey’s eight steals spearheading the attack. Bennett, Audrey Antesberger and Scottie Hull each had three steals as STAB swiped 23 steals as a team. Winkey also had 14 points and dished our four assists.

STAB’s girls led 24-6 in the first quarter and extended that lead to 43-11 by halftime.

The Saints start the LIS tournament next week and then set their sights on the VISAA tournament.
