Robinson, Louisa softball take down Orange

It would have been quite the wasted opportunity.

Taylor Robinson had her stuff in the circle for Louisa County, but heading to the bottom of the sixth, the LIons had just a 1-run lead on rival Orange County. The senior ace got some help with an RBI triple and RBI double to get some breathing room. It did not go to waste as the Lions closed the door in the top of the seventh to pick up a season sweep of the Hornets with a 4-1 win.

“In the past we’ve had difficulty with Orange getting runs on us late,” said Louisa coach Jennifer Failin. “So I think in the fifth I had to remind them again and they made this ‘why would bring that up now?’ look but it was exactly what I wanted to see. They had not settled, they kept pushing.”

The Lions picked up their first two runs in the bottom of the third. There Taylor Dickerson came up with a leadoff double. After a single from Kennedie Batchelor and a wild pitch, it was 1-0. Batchelor would score herself on a single by Robinson.

Orange got on the board in the top of the sixth. After an error with two outs put Lexi Lomax on board, a double from Ashley Brassart made it a 2-1 game.

“My girls fought it out and we haven’t been able to practice because of weather so it was tough,” said Orange coach Doris Buzzell. “I thought Hannah Meadows pitched really well for us and we had to deal with some tough calls that didn’t go our way but that happens. We get Monticello tomorrow so it’s a quick turn around and that should be good.”

The rally in the sixth for the Lions began with Robinson reaching first after she was hit by a pitch. Then Morgan Mitchell came up with an RBI triple. That was followed by a double from Saniya Jones to make it 4-1.

“I knew we needed that insurance,” Mitchell said. “It would have been too close if we hadn’t. I knew with Taylor getting on in front of me I had to move her around.”

That was enough for Robinson as she picked up strikeouts 11 and 12 in the top of the seventh to wrap up the win.

“Honestly I didn’t take a different approach seeing them for a second time,” Robinson said. “I knew what to expect and tried throw strikes and hit my spots.”

Offensively, Robinson was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Amber Lanch was 1-for-1. Mitchell, Batchelor and Jones were all 1-for-3.

For Orange at the plate, both Brassart and Shelby Tidwell-Rowlands were 1-for-3 with a double.
