Western Albemarle’s Maggie Roesch had to battle.
Down a set to Spotswood’s Nicole Shifflett, Roesch had her work cut out for her. She rallied though, and helped close out the Warriors’ girls tennis squad’s 5-0 victory over Spotswood that secured a Region 3A West championship.
Roesch went down 7-6 (3) in the opening set before bouncing back for 6-2, 6-4 wins to snag a victory at No. 5 singles. Stephanie Barton at No. 4 singles was in a similar situation after splitting the first two sets with Spotswood’s Niki Ortiz and leading 5-0 in the third was well on her way toward a win too.
Along with Emily Kochard, Maddy Ix, Lauren Kearns and Savannah Diamond’s two-set wins, that was enough to lift the Warriors to the title.
Western (22-0) will now host a state quarterfinal match Tuesday June 10, with opponent and time to be determined.
