Poindexter’s buzzer beater sparks STAB past Trinity

St. Anne’s-Belfield faced a tall task in order to keep its unbeaten Prep League mark alive with Trinity Episcopal coming to town Tuesday.

Thanks to an explosive night from Malachi Poindexter, the Saints pulled it off, edging Trinity 79-77 with Poindexter burying a tough jumper just inside the 3-point line to lift STAB to the narrow win.

Poindexter finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists on the night. His efforts helped the Saints dig out of a 23-14 first quarter hole as STAB pulled within three at 36-33 by halftime.

By the end of the third, STAB was up with Nick Reese, who finished with 12 points, four boards and two assists, knocking down a 3-pointer at the end of that frame. That set the stage for Poindexter’s heroics down the stretch, which helped STAB overcome Duke commit Henry Coleman’s 29-point effort that included 11 points in the fourth.

Justin Taylor finished with 14 points, four boards and three assists while Carter Lang posted a double double with 14 points and 10 boards. Ethan DeLaurier finished with six rebounds while Eli DeLaurier had five. John St. Germain had three assists on the night.

The Saints (12-5, 4-0 Prep League) will try and keep their unbeaten stretch through the Prep League going Thursday night on the road against a St. Christopher’s team whose one loss on the season came at the hands of Trinity.
