Orange softball beats CHS clinches Jefferson District title

Orange County has that just right mix that every team is looking for — some experienced leadership and some bright young talent.

It’s the kind of mix championships are made of, and the Hornets picked up one of those Monday night, clinching a Jefferson District regular season title with a 13-0 win over Charlottesville.

The Hornets’ Hannah Hearl and Haley Martin combined for a five-inning no-hitter, with Hearl striking out six in three innings while Martin struck two in her two innings of work. The win pushes the Hornets to 10-0 on the year.

Martin did her part at the plate too, knocking in three runs and scoring twice herself while hitting a double and drawing a walk. Zoe Hix and Ja’chelle Mosley each hit doubles as well while Kennon Burnett scored three times and knocked in a pair of runs.

It’s an impressive condensed campaign for the Hornets’ softball program that has a pair of strong junior leaders in Burnett and Reese Rogers. Those two longtime fixtures in the program — they started as freshmen — got a big joly of help from three freshmen on the roster that are playing critical roles. Hix, Mosley and Hearl have all made an impact, with Hearl posting a 9-0 record on the year with 90 strikeouts and just three walks while notching an ERA of 0.30 in 46 innings of work.

Now the Hornets will square off with Fluvanna County Wednesday night before turning their attention to the Region 4B tournament.
