Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team needed a big-time goal in sudden death Monday night, and they got it from a freshman.

Anna Murray scored her lone goal of the game less than a minute into overtime off a Gwen Pattison assist, lifting the Patriots to a 13-12 victory over Deep Run in the Region 5A South quarterfinals.

The Patriots had to claw their way back into the game early on after Deep Run jumped out to a 6-2 lead on Albemarle, seizing control of the game. Albemarle slowly cut into that advantage, trailing by just two at halftime. By midway through the second half, Albemarle tied the game at 8-8 and then led 11-9 with 6:30 to play.

Deep Run refused to go away though and went on a 3-1 run to force overtime, tying the game with 41.4 seconds to play.

Murray proved up to the task in overtime, scoring quickly to end the game and push Albemarle within one win of a spot in the state final four.

Morgan Rose and Kelsey Myers led the Patriots offensively with a hat trick each while Olivia Serbati also had a solid game with two goals on two shots. Cam Edson also notched two goals.

Pattison had a goal and an assist and Sarah Hanssen finished with one goal. Angie Chapman and Jane Pinnata had an assist apiece.

Rose also had four draw controls with Pattison snagged three of them. The Patriots combined to force 10 Deep Run turnovers.

Sydney Whitaker’s four goals and assist led Deep Run offensively.

Albemarle will take on the Massaponax/Douglas Freeman winner in the region semifinals Friday.
