Monticello softball closes out Monroe

Monticello senior pitcher Victoria Scott has had her fair share of close calls and she knows how to get out of them. But it doesn’t make it any easier on her head coach, Beth Humphrey.

“She knows how to correct it but you still get nervous,” Humphrey said. “She doesn’t out many balls in play, so you always wonder are we on our heels, if they put one out there are we going to get nervous. But she usually knows how to right the ship herself.”

Scott got out of one last night, escaping a seventh inning jam to help lift the Mustangs past William Monroe 3-1 in the Jefferson District semifinals. With Monticello set to close it out, the Dragons scratched together some baserunners, refusing to go quietly. Scott clamped down, however, eventually forcing a pop fly to foul territory down the third base line. That’s where sophomore Kaitlyn Bodine came up with a spectacular play, hauling in the pop fly inside the Monroe dugout to end the game and advance the Mustangs.

“She hustles—we have to calm her down in practice sometimes because she’s full of energy,” Humphrey said. “If there’d been a wall there she’d have probably run through it because she’s just a kid who gives 100 percent and doesn’t worry about anything else.”

Scott had 14 strikeouts and didn’t issue a single walk, forcing the Dragons for everything they got while showing exactly why she’s the Jefferson District’s pitcher of the year, announced shortly after the game.

Monticello will go toe-to-toe with Orange County in the JD title game Thursday out at Western Albemarle.
