Monticello golf advances to states, CHS’s Burton wins region individual title

Monticello golf is headed to the state tournament and a Charlottesville golfer is the Region 3C individual champion after a pretty solid day for the Central Virginia golfers at Lake Monticello.

Charlottesville’s Preston Burton carded a 72 to outpace runner-up Ryan Asfa of Spotswood, becoming the first region golf champion in school history for the Black Knights. Burton got the job done in part with a fast start, putting together an impressive 34 on the front nine while he finished with a 38 on the back nine. That brilliant round earns Burton a seat at the table in the Class 3 state championship where he’ll likely be a contender.

The Mustangs wrapped up a state tournament berth with a second place regional finish led by Curt Huffman’s 84. Bailey Bush finished with an 89, Spencer Ratliff had a 91 and Jack Eberl put together a 99 to round out the team’s 363. That allowed the Mustangs to hold off third place Staunton High’s 365. Spotswood won the championship with a score of 335 as a team.

Fluvanna’s Killian Donnelly finished with an 81, barely missing the state cut while Cohen Purviance had a 91 for the Flucos.

The Class 3 state finals are October 11 at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon and Burton and the Mustangs will compete at that event.
