Monticello baseball wins a tight one over Albemarle

In the Jefferson District in 2017, you’re going to have to win some one-run games to prosper.

Monticello got one of those critical wins Tuesday night, holding on to beat Albemarle 2-1.

Tommy Carter picked up the complete game win for the Mustangs. Carter leaned on his defense, striking out just three and allowing just five hits and one walk.

Carter out-dueled Albemarle’s Scott Reid who struck out seven and allowed just three hits and four walks. Only one of the Mustangs’ two runs were earned.

Ben Riley and Jake Byrnes each knocked in a run for Monticello to stake them to the 2-1 lead after Albemarle opened the game with Reid knocking in a run in the first inning.

Jake Browning had a double for Albemarle while Ryan Porter stole a base. Porter had a strong night at the plate, going 3-for-4 scoring the Patriots’ lone run. The Patriots stranded six runners.
