Madison powers past William Monroe

Nearly every time Madison County’s Logan Terrell touched the ball against William Monroe Friday night, bad things happened for the Dragons.

And half the time, the senior put points on the board.

Terrell needed just eight carries to lead the Mountaineers to a 57-7 romp over William Monroe. In those eight touches, Terrell piled up 124 yards and four touchdowns, including a 57-yard sprint that put Madison up 21-0.

“Our up front people did a really good job of getting off the ball and opening up some holes,” said Madison coach Stuart Dean. “But we (also) threw the ball with a little bit better balance. That’s going to open up the holes for the run game.”

Devon Boone benefited as well with six carries for 80 yards.

Dustin Kirby led the improved passing attack, throwing for 126 yards on 6-for-20 passing.

It was Madison’s defense though that kickstarted the rout by forcing six turnovers, including five interceptions. Chris Fincham spearheaded that effort with three interceptions, and returned one of those picks in the third quarter for a touchdown.

“It was about playing responsibility defense, trusting my teammates to do their part and then doing mine,” Fincham said. “I was reading (Monroe quarterback Mitchell Morris’) eyes and he was turning his shoulder the wrong way. Then I just took a chance.”

The method worked three times for the linebacker, and teammate Antonio Childress nearly matched the effort with two picks of his own. Childress also took one to the house, a 65-yard return for a score that paired nicely with his 27-yard reception for a touchdown on offense.

Monroe was hampered all night by penalties. The officials tagged Monroe with 102 penalty yards on 10 infractions.

Still, there were bright spots for Monroe. Doug Sizemore picked up 53 yards on a pair of shovel passes and Markees Towles averaged 7.1 yards per carry while piling up 71 yards on 10 touches including the Dragons’ lone touchdown.

The Dragons’ six turnovers limited any impact those stats could have on the game, forcing Monroe’s defense back onto the field time and time again.

Monroe hosts Eastern View next Friday while Madison battles Nelson County at home.
