Keeping it Simple

Augusta Peds

Western Albemarle girls tennis is keeping things simple and straightforward during the postseason.

“We know we’ve got to be prepared because each day gets tougher,” said Western coach Ellen Markowitz. “We’re getting as ready as we can, getting good sleep, good hydration and just being ready to play.”

The approach is paying off, as the Warriors extended their 44-match win streak with another victory Monday, this time in the Region 3A West quarterfinals 5-0 over Brookville. The victory puts the Warriors in the region semifinals and a victory away from qualifying for the state tournament.

The Conference 29 champion Warriors got a couple of 6-0, 6-0 performances from Maddy and Rosy Ix in the No. 1 and No. 5 slots respectively. Stephanie Barton, Hannah Kearns and Savannah Diamond also cruised. Diamond rolled 6-1, 6-0.

Noelle Stith was up 5-2 in the opening set before her match was called as the Warriors had already won the match.

Western will face Blacksburg Tuesday in the region semifinals at 4:30 p.m., with the victor advancing to the state tournament.
