Heating Up: Covenant boys basketball drops Fishburne in VIC tournament opener

Covenant’s boys basketball team is red hot right now.

The Eagles, who were recently elevated to a No. 2 ranking in VISAA’s Division III, beat Fishburne 57-38 in the VIC quarterfinals to pick up Covenant’s 10th win in the last 11 games.

Covenant, the VIC D2’s No. 1 seed, got 17 points from star Jonas Sanker and another 13 points from Bryson Alley. Sanker was particularly efficient, going 5-for-7 from the field 4-for-4 at the free throw. He was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

Alley hit three threes of his own and needed just five attempts to get them.

Covenant jumped out to a 21-9 lead in the first quarter and then expanded that lead with a 17-7 third quarter. That created a 22-point hole for Fishburne to try and dig out of in the fourth and Covenant kept clamping down, preventing a rally by the Caissons.

Sanker added six rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Eagles while Nic Sanker had seven points, six boards, six assists.

Colin White chipped in six boards and Covenant finished with a 9-for-18 performance as a team beyond the arc.

The Eagles advance to the VIC semifinals where they’ll face No. 4 Carlisle Thursday.
