Getting it started

Getting off on the right foot is critical in district tournament play, and there’s no way Albemarle’s boys and girls tennis teams could’ve gotten off to a better start Monday than they did in the Commonwealth quarterfinals.

Albemarle’s girls squad dropped only one game en route to defeating North Stafford. All three doubles squads won handily while Megan Napolitano, Abby Lesnoff, Tori Kuhn and Elise Lord then closed out the win with 10-0 romps in singles.

The Albemarle boys team took care of business by polishing off North Stafford too, winning in less than an hour. First off the courts was Mike Barton who, after struggling with his forehand the past two weeks, committed just two unforced forehand errors and knocked down over 75 percent of his first serves. Timmy Shaw was leading 9-0, 30-0 when the match was officially halted as Ben Anderson recorded the fifth and deciding point.

Both Albemarle squads will play in the semifinals on Wednesday, with the boys facing Massaponax starting at 5 p.m.
