Fluvanna’s Rateau to be inducted into Virginia High School Hall of Fame

This one might be a little bit overdue, but since his work wasn’t really done until the end of this year, maybe the timing is perfect.

Fluvanna County boys basketball coach Munro Rateau, who led the Flucos for 35 years, will be inducted into the Virginia High School Hall of Fame on October 12 at the DoubleTree in Charlottesville. The VHSL announced the new class in a release Tuesday. Rateau retired from the boys basketball coaching job this season, giving way to longtime assistant Jason Davis.

“I know that Munro is very deserving of his place in the hall of fame,” said Davis, who worked with Fluvanna County athletic director Scott Morris to nominate Rateau. “He has taught a generation of coaches about coaching leadership and how to love your players and each other. It has been an honor to be a small part of his incredible career.”

Rateau won 525 games in his career including a pair of state championships in 1989 and 1990. His teams won 11 district and six region championships. He also served as an assistant coach in football, basketball, baseball, girls basketball and softball while also taking stints at the helm of the track and golf programs.

He’s the first Central Virginia inductee since Burley coach Robert Smith, who led the Bears to four state championships and a 28-game win streak from 1955-1958, was inducted in 2012.

Former Fluvanna student Bryan Rothamel wrote about Rateau earlier this year for Scrimmage Play:

A tribute: Rateau leaves special legacy at Fluvanna
