Less than nine points separated the first place team from third.
The girls Jefferson District track and field championship was a true battle. But the theme this year in this sport and stretching back in cross country has been Fluvanna County’s rise. On Wednesday, the Flucos added an outdoor title to their indoor and cross country district titles in a wild meet.
“We’ve got some amazing talent and so many of the girls on this team worked all year round to get here,” said Fluvanna coach Tom Casto. “We always start with the field events. It’s track and field so there’s a lot of points to be had there. With Greer Brown, Maddie Kline and Hannah Meador we knew they would be big. But discus was big too. The field events set up the meet and that helped a lot.”
Greer Brown was huge for the Flucos. She won the high jump and took second in the 200, ran a leg for the second place 4×100 relay team, second again in the 100 hurdles, third in the triple jump and fourth in the triple jump. Hannah Meador won the pole vault and also ran a leg for the second place 4×400 relay team. Also a member of the 4×400 squad, Maddie Kline also had a big day, winning the 300 hurdles and placing fourth in the 100 hurdles,
Courtney Searcy and Casey Dudle went 2-3 in the discus. Nicki Douma was on the 4×400 team and was second in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200. Fluvanna took second in the 4×800 relay.
“It’s great to have the youth on this team and the theme this year was ‘forge the steel.’” Casto said. “Everyone’s trained so hard and that is what we’ve worked on, getting stronger mentally and physically.”
Louisa County, behind an unreal day from Javanique Burruss, edged Western Albemarle for second by just half of a point. Burruss finished with five first place finishes including the long jump, triple jump, 100 hurdles and as a member of the winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams. Her day where she set stadium records earned her athlete of the year honors.
Western’s 4×800 relay team took first place. Freshman Annie Taylor won the 3200. Maggie Kooken walked away on top in the shotput and discus. Katie Farina finished out front in the 800.
Other winners included Charlottesville’s Taylor Watkins who gave Burruss a run for the money for best performance. The Black Knight sprinter won both the 100, 200 and 400.
The Region II meet will be held on Wednesday at Tuscarora.
