Flucos dedicate indoor facility to Rateau

Fluvanna County honored former boys basketball coach Munro Rateau as the Flucos officially renamed their indoor athletic facility “Munro Rateau Court” on Tuesday evening.

“It’s very humbling and a great honor,” Rateau said. “The thing I want people to realize is that there are a lot of people that put a lot of work into this. (Athletic Director) Scott Morris, (Principal) James Barlow, the players the managers, the assistant coaches over the years, they’ve just done a great job of being a family. So it’s really a humbling experience.”

Rateau coached at Fluvanna for 35 years and won a pair of state championships during his tenure in 1989 and 1990. He led his school to 525 win, 11 district and six region championships. While renowned as the boys basketball coach he’s assisted in football, baseball, girls basketball, softball, track and field and golf. But on the hardwood most recently, in 2012 he and the Flucos made it to the Group AA Division 4 final four. This fall Rateau will be inducted to the Virginia High School Hall of Fame.

Rateau retired after the 2016 season, handing the reigns over to longtime assistant Jason Davis. And while he’s no longer leading the Flucos on the sidelines, Rateau has no plans on staying at home during basketball season.

“I think the program’s in great hands and Jason is going to do a great job,” Rateau said. “I’m going to support them any way I can… It will be cool when my three grandchildren get to play (on this court). I think that’s when I’ll really appreciate it.”
