Covenant knocks off LCA

Covenant picked up a big one in the Virginia Independent Conference Wednesday evening, but they had to go to extra innings to get it, knocking off Liberty Christian Academy 6-5.

With the game knotted at 5-5, No. 9 hitter Brady Doyle drew a walk to start the bottom of the eighth, then Jesse Getchell bunted Doyle over to second. That brought Sean Rutherford to the plate, and Rutherford ripped a single to left field. Doyle wheeled around third and beat the throw to home to give the Eagles the win.

Rutherford pitched 6.1 innings for Covenant before Lee Crutchfield came in as a reliever and picked up the win.

Lee Coppock went 2 for 4 on the night while Ethan Taylor went 1 for 1 and Clark Crutchfield went 2 for 3 including an RBI single in the second that followed Ethan Taylor’s sacrifice fly.

Covenant faces Carlisle Friday at home.
