Coppock, Covenant explode against Hargrave

Covenant had to wait a couple of extra days in order to play against Hargrave because of a flu outbreak at the military academy.

It was worth the wait.

The Eagles’ offensive numbers were staggering Tuesday afternoon in a 62-28 victory over the Tigers. Lee Coppock needed just 21 attempts to throw for 455 yards against Hargrave, completing 14 passes for seven touchdowns in the explosive offensive performance. Sam Dale hauled in six catches for 242 yards and three touchdowns.

Sam Patterson got the scoring started with a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown on Covenant’s first kick return after an early Hargrave touchdown. Patterson also had two receiving scores, his only two receptions on the day that went for a total of 54 yards.

Chris Shifflett had a pair of touchdowns, one rushing, one receiving, and 72 all-purpose yards. Even Boo Agee got in on the action with 101 yards and two touchdowns on two catches.

Fred O’Connor had 13 tackles and a sack while Adam Villio totaled seven stops and an interception.

The Eagles next take on Virginia Episcopal Friday at 3 p.m. in a home contest.
