Collegiate girls lacrosse knocks off STAB

Collegiate’s girls lacrosse team knew they needed to bounce back after falling to St. Catherine’s earlier in the week, but they also knew doing that on the road against St. Anne’s-Belfield was no easy task.

That awareness is why the Cougars were locked in from the start, and after building a quick four-goal lead lead pulled away to beat the Saints 13-8.

“We came off of a tough game on Tuesday and we knew we had to fight, STAB is always such a great team,” said Collegiate coach Annie Richards. “We knew we had to put the whole game plan together. Our middies did a great job of handling the draws and our attack just kind of settled in and played our game.”

Jordan Marcus led the early assault with a pair of goals in the first four and finished with five goals to lead the Cougars while also chipping in a pair of assists. Gwin Sinnett and Maggie Bostain also notched goals during that early run.

While that spurt put the Saints on their heels, STAB got on track in the second half and stayed within striking distance.

“Going against an experienced team versus our inexperienced team made it tough but I thought we hung in there, we chipped away at their lead,” said STAB coach Mary Blake. “This is a process right now, we’re young and inexperienced and we’ve just got to think about the process.”

Claire Schotta scored three goals to set the pace for STAB while McKenzie Maurer came up with two.

Six different players scored for Collegiate, with Harper Zaun finishing with a hat trick and an assist while Georgia Beazley had two goals for the Cougars.

“We were really pumped with the whole team effort,” Richards said.
