At The Buzzer: Poindexter three lifts Covenant past Roanoke Catholic

Covenant’s boys basketball team seemed headed overtime no matter what.

Connor Poindexter made sure they didn’t have to with a dagger and a 62-59 win in the first round of the VIC tournament.

With the game deadlocked and time winding down, the Eagles’ Jonas Sanker raced the length of the floor and when Roanoke Catholic cut him off from driving the lane, he kicked to Poindexter.

Right in front of a raucous Covenant student section, Poindexter connected as the buzzer sounded, helping the Eagles avenge a narrow loss to the Celtics on February 12.

The Eagles advance to take on North Cross on the road in the VIC semifinals at 6:30 p.m.

Sanker poured in 25 points to lead the Eagles, including three second half 3-pointers. Chris Messimer finished with 14 points and Nic Sanker had 10 points. Poindexter had nine points three 3-pointers, including the game-winner. Covenant buried nine 3-pointers as a team.

Covenant built a 17-12 lead in the first quarter and held a slight 26-25 advantage at halftime.

Mykah English led Roanoke Catholic with 24, knocking down all of his 10 fourth quarter free throw attempts.
