Blue Ridge cruises past Randolph Macon

It was ugly and out-of-sync at times, but that rust from the bye week didn’t matter much for Blue Ridge Saturday because the Barons’ defense didn’t let Randolph Macon take advantage.

Repelling two red zone opportunities in the first half while creating five total turnovers including one that gave the Barons the ball inside the Randolph Macon five, Blue Ridge cruised 47-0 over Randolph Macon to improve to 5-1 on the year.

As has become a trend this year, Aden Britton and Spencer Glenn led the defensive effort, with Britton notching 10 total tackles, three of them for a loss. Glenn had seven total stops. The Barons led 20-0 at the half in part because the defense stepped up twice in the redzone, once turning the Jackets away after surrendering a long run and again after a solid punt return gave RMA the ball at the 20.

Cameron Carr streaked in from 39 yards out for a touchdown to open the scoring for the Barons out of the gate and finished with 64 yards as part of a balanced three-headed ground game. Xavier Kane led the Barons with 69 yards and a touchdown on five touches while Sammy Fort had 53 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Five different Blue Ridge players scored rushing touchdowns, with Juan Mareco and Icesys Lewis joining that trio.

Kane also went 5-for-9 for 98 yards through the air, highlighted by a 36-yard toss to Michael Asher that required Kane to roll left and throw back against his body before dropping it in to Asher right next to the sideline. Carr finished with 53 yards receiving on three catches.

Mareco’s three-yard touchdown plunge came after Abdoulaye Camara forced a fumble by the Randolph Macon quarterback and Mareco scooped it up and sprinted 48 yards down to the three. The Barons recovered four total fumbles and Sammy Fort picked off a pass, returning it 53 yards. Zymir Faulkner, Caleb Werner and Britton each had fumble recoveries.

The Barons will hit the road Saturday to take on Virginia Episcopal at 2 p.m.
