Basketball Roundup 2.19.19: Goochland boys and girls, Buckingham boys advance

Buckingham’s boys basketball got stuck hitting the road in the opening round of the Region 2C playoffs, heading to Chatham.

Not a problem, apparently.

The Knights rolled past Chatham 64-31 with a huge second half from Jalen Chambers who poured in all of his team-high 20 points before the break.

The win pushes the Knights into the Region 2C semifinals and they’ll go on the road to take on Gretna for a shot at the Class 2 state tournament Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

D.J. Lassenberry scored 12 points for the Knights while A.J. Johnson had nine points and six boards. A.J. Johnson finished with nine points and six rebounds while Xavian Gough had six points and 10 rebounds.

Goochland boys advance to region semis

It seems that whenever Goochland’s boys basketball team needs a big win, they get an all-around, stat sheet stuffing game from Quincy Snead.

Goochland fought off Poquoson for a 46-35 victory in the Region 2A quarterfinals Monday night and Snead had one of those games, leading the Bulldogs (20-3) with 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Deion Harwood also helped clean up the boards with 12 rebounds to go with his six points. With James Bell and Kam Holman each scoring nine points, Goochland had enough offense to capitalize on a suffocating defensive effort as they held Poquoson to less than 10 points per quarter.

Gooochland will host Brunswick Wednesday night in the Region 2A semifinals with a state tournament bid on the line.

Goochland girls cruise past Prince Edward

Goochland’s girls basketball team beat Prince Edward 63-46 Monday night, locking up a spot in the Region 2A semifinals to put the Bulldogs one win away from a state tournament berth.

Lanaysia Gonzalez poured in 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for a monster double double to lead the Bulldogs. Justice Tibbs scored 13 points, pulled down 11 boards and dished out two assists. Gabby Ragone had seven points and nine assists.

Goochland hits the road to battle Greensville Wednesday night in the region semifinals.
