Basketball Roundup 1.15.18: Miller boys, STAB boys, STAB girls pick up key wins

Miller’s boys basketball team knew it was going to have to rework things with DaeDae Heard out of the lineup with an injury heading into a key VIC clash with Virginia Episcopal.

 

Point guard Jordon Brown made sure that rework went smoothly.

 

Brown exploded for 21 points to lead the Mavericks, 18 of them in the first half to help Miller build a 15-point halftime lead. John St. Germain did more of the heavy lifting, scoring nine of his 14 points after the break Tariq Balogun finished with 18 points, with the big man knocking down 10 of 11 free throw attempts.

 

Garrett Payne chipped in nine points and Daryl Anderson had seven points.

 

The Mavericks will host Highland Thursday.

 

STAB boys beat Woodberry Forest

St. Anne’s-Belfield boys basketball picked up its second straight Prep League win with a 71-44 victory over Woodberry Forest Tuesday night.

 

Justin Taylor poured in 25 points in the win, with 23 of them coming in the first half. Mesiah Woods set the table most of the night while dishing out nine assists while Dalton Taylor followed up last week’s triple double with an 18-point outing against the Tigers.

 

Ethan DeLaurier finished with eight points and eight boards for the Saints.

 

STAB girls drop St. Gertrude

St. Anne’s-Belfield girls basketball picked up a road win over St. Gertrude Tuesday, rolling 53-31 over the Gators to move to 14-1 on the season.

 

Kymora Johnson led the Saints with 13 points, five assists and four steals. Vanessa Woodfolk posted a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

 

William Monroe girls beat Skyline

William Monroe girls basketball battled Skyline Tuesday night and picked up a 44-34 win at home behind a big double double from Martha Apple

 

Apple scored 21 points and pulling down 12 boards. Iyanna Carey had seven points and 12 rebounds while Bryonna Woofter and Hailey Morris each notched six points. Jenna Velasquez had four points and five rebounds.

 

Nelson boys cruise past Appomattox

Nelson County’s boys basketball team rolled 58-41 past Appomattox, storming back from a 15-6 first quarter deficit with a huge third quarter.

 

Nelson outscored the Raiders 16-3 in the third quarter frame.

 

Houston Carter led the way with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals while Brice Wilson had 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Joey Monast had eight points for the Governors.

 

William Monroe boys drop Skyline

William Monroe’s boys beat Skyline 65-55 to pick up the Dragons’ fourth straight road victory and run their record to 9-4 on the season.

 

Alex Kinsey led the way with 21 points while Logan Barbour notched 20. Trevaughn Powell chipped in six points and six rebounds while Calvin Turner and Parker Woolford had eight rebounds each.

 

The Dragons will try and keep this run going when they host Warren County Friday.
