Balanced Effort: Charlottesville pushes past Nelson County

Charlottesville’s boys basketball team completed a season sweep of Nelson County Monday night, picking up a 69-56 victory over the Governors.

A balanced offensive effort led the way for the Black Knights with Zymir Faulkner scoring 14 points, Jake Bowling scoring 13 points and Isaiah Washington notching 11 points. Nick Motley dished out seven assists and knocked down nine points to round out the bulk of the offense. The Black Knights shot 50.9 percent from the field including a solid 44.4 percent from beyond the line while knocking down eight 3-pointers as a team.

Charlottesville (11-1) jumped out to a 22-8 lead before Nelson reeled the Black Knights back in and trailed just 30-22 at the half. Still, Nelson couldn’t dig out of that early hole completely in the second half as Charlottesville scored enough to keep Nelson at arm’s length.

The Governors got a monster effort from Jaren Purvis who registered a double double with 23 points and 11 boards, shooting 8-for-13 from the field. Jamel Rose chipped in nine points and Houston Carter had eight to go with six rebounds.

Brice Wilson finished with seven points, seven assists and four steals and the Governors went 11-for-16 at the free throw line as a team.

Charlottesville will look to keep things going at E.C. Glass Wednesday while Nelson travels to William Campbell Tuesday.
