Another First: Goochland boys win first region championship

Historic feats are starting to stack up for Goochland’s boys basketball team.

 

First state tournament berth, check.

The Bulldogs beat Greensville 55-43 Friday night to win the Class 2, Region A championship, riding another big night from Deion Harwood and solid free throw shooting to get the job done.

 

Harwood knocked down five 3-pointers en route to a 20-point effort that also included nine rebounds and three blocks.Meanwhile, the Bulldogs went 9-for-11 from the free throw line, going 9-for-11 as a team with Quincy Snead knocking down all four of his attempts in the frame. Snead scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds while going 5-for-6 at the line for the game.

 

Goochland built a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and Greensville never managed to get back into after that. By halftime it was a 24-18 lead but the Bulldogs were still in control and stretched the lead back out to 10 at 41-31 in the third quarter.

 

Tyquan Odom finished with 15 points to lead Greensville.

 

Goochland will host the loser of the R.E. Lee/Central Woodstock battle in the Region B championship game Friday at Fluvanna County in the Class 2 state quarterfinals.
