Albemarle’s volleyball team is getting cranked up and there may not be anyone in the Jefferson District that can slow the Patriots down.

Albemarle rolled 3-0 Tuesday night against Monticello to move to 15-1 on the year and 5-0 in the JD.

Stephanie Lugus and Alexis Duday each knocked down 10 kills while Madison Warlick finished with eight kills. Lugus was also strong defensively with five blocks, combining with Emery Hawkins’ two blocks for a solid performance against the Mustangs while guarding the net. Ellie Benning finished with 34 assists and Cindy Yu had 17 digs, three aces and 13 service point. Katie Smith had two aces while Benning had three aces on the night.

The Patriots won game one 25-22, stepping out to a 6-1 lead before Monticello pulled within a point at 18-17. That’s when Lugus stepped up with a block and a kill to push the Patriots to a 21-18 lead, though the Mustangs refused to go away, tying the game at 21-21. With Sarah Hanssen on the service line, Albemarle reeled off three points to go up 24-21 before closing 25-22.

Albemarle jumped out to a 21-9 lead in game two, but the Mustangs stepped up and closed the gap again before eventually falling 25-19. In the third set it was all Patriots as they led 16-2 and eventually closed out 25-7.

Albemarle heads to Powhatan Thursday in a clash of Jefferson District unbeatens, a big road test for the Patriots. Monticello also faces a critical road test that night as they travel to take on Fluvanna.
