Coming off a gritty win at Powhatan last week, Albemarle cruised over a rebuilding Fluvanna County squad with a 3-0 sweep at home Tuesday night.

Cindy Yu, who finished with 18 service points, got the Patriots going with a big run at the service line to start the match, sparking the Patriots to a 10-0 lead in the first game. The Flucos struggled to counter against a structured Patriot attack guided by Ellie Benning who finished with 24 assists on the night. Albemarle stormed through the first game winning 25-10.

Fluvanna stepped up in game two, keeping it close through the first eight points but created some separation behind a pair of kills by Haley Dillon.

After a timeout midway through the game, the Patriots and Flucos traded blows for the remainder of game two. Albemarle rallied late with the help of Alexis Duday’s four kills and two service points as well as two blocks by Gabby DeGennaro to knot the game at 23. Then Stephanie Lugus’ back-to-back kills stole game two for the Patriots, 25-23.

In the third game, the Patriots closed, cruising 25-14 past the Flucos. Lugus and Duday led Albemarle with 10 kills a piece. Meanwhile Dillon led Fluvanna with three blocks and Tyler Haislip finished with with four kills.

Albemarle’s sweep was the Patriots’ 10th of the year. The Patriots improved to 17-1 on the season and 7-0 in the Jefferson District while Fluvanna slipped to 4-9-2 on the season.

Albemarle continues its homestand against Louisa while Fluvanna looks to rebound against a struggling Charlottesville team on the road Thursday night.
