Albemarle runs past Mountain View

It didn’t matter which end of the field they were on, they were dominant. It was a one-sided showing from start to finish on Wednesday night as the Albemarle boys lacrosse team struck early and often against Mountain View and coasted to a 13-2 win.

“We had been struggling with bringing in emotion and staying up for four quarters,” said Patriots coach Pat McAdams. “I think we did that tonight. We were certainly fired up coming out and we executed. Our goal tonight was to maintain possession and play strong defense and I think we did both of those things.”

Two minutes into the game, Albemarle sophomore John Chandler found the back of the net to put his team up 1-0, and with the Wildcats unable to beat out the Patriots for a ground ball, much less maintain possession to create any sustained offense, the goals kept coming.

“We came out a lot stronger than we have before,” Chandler said. “We were a lot more intense and I think that’s what gave us the edge through the first quarter and then the rest of the game. We just kept passing — it was probably one of our best passing games.”

Dalton Stokes and Hunter McCann got rolling midway through the first quarter. McCann picked up a goal on a pass from Billy Crist just a minute before Stokes hammered home a goal off a pass from McCann. Stokes then scored for the second time in the period, this time off a pass from Chandler to give Albemarle a 4-0 lead.

“Everybody really stepped up tonight,” Stokes said. “We really had a fire in our stomach tonight.”

The Patriots added two more goals in the second quarter to go up 6-0, but a last second goal from Mountain View’s Nick Small made it a 5-goal game heading into the second half.

Crist scored two of Albemarle’s four third quarter goals and assisted the two others. Jervon Speller, who played a big part in winning the ground ball battle, then picked up a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter to keep padding the lead. Tyler Johnson netted the final score of the night for the Patriots on a Chandler pass.

Chandler finished the game with two goals and two assists as did Crist, who also managed to register his 100th career assist in the first quarter. Stokes scored twice and picked up an assist. McCann had a goal and two assists.

The Patriots play one of their toughest Commonwealth District rivals on Friday when they face Brooke Point and then step out of the district to play a potential Northwest Region opponent, Loudoun Valley, on Monday.

“We’ve got a huge game Friday and a huge game Monday,” McAdams said. “So we’re in a tight squeeze right now and need to be ready to play and be fired up everytime we come out.”

Albemarle (6-0, 4-0) heads to Brooke Point on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
