Albemarle’s golf team just keeps getting it done.

Thursday, the Patriots won the first Region 5D South Subregional tournament, the new first step in the VHSL playoffs at Birdwood.

Jack Bruns and Cooper Ezell each notched 76s to lead the way for the Patriots. Ryan Porter and Jack Kelly each finished with 85s to give the Patriots a cumulative score of 322, enough to hold off second place Halifax by one stroke. Both Halifax and Albemarle advance to the Region 5D tournament finals Tuesday at Augustine Golf Club in Stafford..

Orange County finished fifth as a team, with Zach Redifer’s 100 earning him an individual spot in the next tournament.

Under the new VHSL realignment, Albemarle was placed in Group 5, Region 5D and the region adopted an all-in model in most sports with sub-regional tournaments funneling into a regional tournament. The subregion is roughly equivalent to the Conference level in the last alignment and the south subregion includes some Conference 16 holdovers in Halifax, Patrick Henry-Roanoke and Orange County.
