Albemarle girls soccer shuts out Charlottesville

Albemarle was looking forward to taking on Charlottesville Thursday night, and with a 6-0 win, it ended up being a satisfying night for the Patriots.

“We love playing Charlottesville,” Albemarle coach Amy Sherrill said. “It is fun to play against our local rivals. It’s fun to play against girls they compete against with SOCA and their MONU teams.”

After ten minutes of gridlocked action, Brooke Bauman broke through for the Patriots with a long-range strike eight yards outside of the penalty box to put Albemarle up 1-0. The goals kept flowing from there as Albemarle’s diverse attack heated up. Three minutes later, Leticia Freitas slotted a curling attempt into the bottom right of the goal extending Albemarle’s lead, 2-0. From there, Albemarle rolled onwards.

With two speedsters in Hannah Eiden and Katie Schnell, Albemarle’s attack wreaked havoc on the Black Knights’ back line. The only things keeping the ball from the back of the net were the lineman’s offsides flag or the hands of Charlottesville keeper Soyata Subba.

Despite Subba’s sure hands Eiden and Schnell both netted goals before the halftime whistle, making it 4-0 at the break.

“We are all about sharing the wealth. We don’t have one key player that goes out there, everyone collectively loves to go out there and get it done,” Sherrill said.

Defensively the Patriots held the Black Knights without a shot on goal and maintaining a shutout.

“We love defense. We were trying some new formations tonight and it didn’t matter who we put back there,” Sherrill said. “Defense kept the shutout which was huge.”

Albemarle knocked in two more goals in the second half, capping the night’s scoring with a cross from Freitas to Paige Horn’s cleat into the back of the net, making it 6-0.

“[The girls] love to share the ball,” Sherrill said. “They love their teammates going in there and getting the credit. I think on the last goal Leticia could have put it in the back of the net but she shared the love for her teammate.”

Albemarle’s Jefferson District victory sends them to 2-0-1 overall as they prepare for their March 31 matchup with Orange County. Meanwhile Charlottesville will look for their first win of the season against an undefeated Monticello squad on March 31.
