Albemarle girls soccer beats Patrick Henry, earns region tournament berth

For the fifth year in a row, Albemarle girls soccer is headed back to the regional tournament, which is good because they’ve got some unfinished business.

“That’s awesome for us to continue that tradition, we’re just hoping to make some noise once we get there instead of getting knocked out early,” said Albemarle coach Amy Sherrill.

Albemarle earned their spot in the region field by dropping Patrick Henry-Roanoke Wednesday night 3-0 in the Conference 16 semifinals.

With a little more than 18 minutes left in the first half, Albemarle got on the board first, with Hannah Eiden scoring on a header as part of a slick play for AHS.

“Our freshman Megan Schnell hit a free kick in and Sunny (Gelnovatch) headed it on to Hannah Eiden headed it into the goal,” Sherrill said. “It was really pretty.”

Albemarle also got goals from Sunny Gelnovatch and Katherine Brady with assists from Megan Schantz and Brooke Bauman. While it was a productive outing for the Patriots, it continued a trend of Albemarle’s defense continuing to play solid while the offense leaving a few good chances on the table. That can happen when you don’t get a chance to work things out on the practice field.

“We’re getting the chances, we’re just knocking them home,” Sherrill said. “I think a lot of it’s due to the fact that we haven’t practice in awhile. Rain has limited where we’re at. We really haven’t had a real practice in a month.”

Albemarle moves on to the Conference 16 final Friday at home against Atlee. They’ll head to region play after that match.
