Albemarle boys take Ben Hair title

Forest Lakes primary

Nick Pease, Jeffrey Leckrone, Hogan Harper and Jack Hensien leapt into the pool in succession during the 200-medley relay for Albemarle. The quartet won easily by more than three seconds against runner-up Charlottesville and served notice that Albemarle was going to be a force at the 2015 Ben Hair Memorial Swim and Dive Meet Tuesday night.

“They did great, we were really proud of all of them,” said Albemarle coach Ellyn Baumgardner. “

The Patriots marched ahead from there, winning the team title 338-295 over second place Western Albemarle. It was a solid win because like many of the meet’s elite swimmers, Albemarle’s top competitors were at an interesting point in their training.

“This stage is always interesting because a lot of our kids are in club swimming and they’ve come off their hard winter training so you just never know which way that’s going to go with some of them,” Baumgardner said. “For a lot of these guys it put them in a great position.”

Jack Robbins and Harper were two of them, as Robbins won the 100-free and was the runner-up in 200-free while Harper won the 200-IM with a 5A state qualifying time and took second in the 100-back.

Caleb Smith also had a big night, taking third in the 200-IM and fourth in the 100-free. Pease took third in the 100-back and freshman Nick Ashby took fifth in the 200-IM. In the 500-free, the Patriots’ Joe Keller and Danny Jacobsen went third and fourth.

Albemarle got a big boost from the other two relays too, winning the 400-free and taking third in the 200-free relay race.

Western put together its second place team finish behind a strong effort from Aaron James (second in the 50-free and third in the 100-free). Western’s boys won the 200-free relay too give the Warriors a big jolt.

STAB’s Brian Hynes won the 200-free and the 100-fly while the Saints’ Matt McHugh took third in 50-free and second in 100-free,

Covenant’s Ben Holstege won the 50-free and 100-back as the nights only double champion while teammate Sam Holstege took third in 100-breast.

Fork Union’s Samer Khalil was the runner-up in 100-fly and FUMA took second in 200-free relay and fourth in 400-free relay. The Blue Devils’ Mazen Youseff fourth in 100-breast

Woodberry’s Nick Switzer took second in 200-IM and won the 100-breast. The Tigers’ Austen Billingsley finished fourth in the 200-IM and second in 100-breast while Chas Sigloh went third in 100-fly and 100-back. The Tigers took fourth in 200-free relay and second in 400-free
