Albemarle boys soccer edges Mountain View in region title match

This time of year, you’ve often got to be able to win on the road and that’s going to require someone to come up clutch.

Albemarle’s boys soccer team can check both off the list after Thursday.

The Patriots got an overtime goal and made it count Thursday night, edging out Mountain View on the road in the Class 5, Region D championship game. Albemarle wins the region title for the second time in three years after getting knocked out in the quarterfinals a year ago and earns a home playoff game against the Region C runner-up, either Briar Woods or Wakefield.

After a scoreless regulation period in the afternoon clash, Andrew Weber notched the game’s lone goal in the first overtime off an assist from Wesley Cheuk. Thomas Leckrone made several critical saves for the Patriots to preserve the win.

Albemarle will face either Briar Woods or Wakefield Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Class 5 state quarterfinals.
