Albemarle boys lacrosse accelerates past Covenant

Albemarle’s boys lacrosse team has been riding a bit of a roller coaster this season, a product of a largely new cast that hasn’t proven itself quite yet, though a win over Western Albemarle two weeks ago was a good start.

They took another step toward that goal Friday afternoon, accelerating past Covenant for a 12-10 victory over the Eagles.

The Patriots trailed 7-5 at the end of the first half after a particularly rough second quarter where Covenant closed on a 4-0 run to finish the frame.

Craig Van Dyke scored a couple of those goals during the run, notching his hat trick for the game before the break. Luke Sorenson and Oakleigh Archer also had three goals each. The Eagles had to overcome a massive 21-5 disadvantage on faceoffs to hang in the game.

But Albemarle made an equally big push in the third quarter to regain control of the game and led 9-8 heading into the third.

Sam Mallow and Connor Warner each finished with hat tricks for the Patriots with Mallow also notching an assist. Silas Beers had two goals and two assists, Forest Warner had a goal and two assists and Andrew Scanlon and Lorenz Brown each had a goal and an assist.

Ryan Richardson needed just five saves to preserve the win for the Patriots in the cage.
