Albemarle senior Zach Mackenzie set the pace with an individual championship and Albemarle’s pack of runners followed him to a Conference 16 team title.

Mackenzie pulled off the win by just three seconds, beating runner-up Kameron Helmlinger of Atlee. The Patriots picked up the win with Sean Mcgovern in fourth, Mark Pellissieer in sixth, Harris Naseh in seventh and Josh Fard in ninth. Justin Fabrizio and John McDaniel didn’t score, but placed 11th and 12th overall, giving the Patriots seven of the meet’s top 12 spots.

The Patriots earn a spot in the Region 5A North meet with the victory.

Orange County finished fourth as a team in the meet by edging Patrick Henry-Ashland and Halifax County, with Griffin Floyd’s 14th place finish leading the Hornets. Bobby Lee took 15th overall, Eligh Suggs finished 19th, Chance Bowers was in 26th ad Conor Oelrich finished 30th. Only Oelrich is slated to graduate this year, giving the Hornets a solid stable of runners next year.
