Winkey explodes to push STAB girls past Sidwell Friends

St Anne’s-Belfield’s Jovia Winkey caught fire Saturday against Sidwell Friends.

And it’s a good thing, because the Saints needed nearly every single point Winkey notched, picking up a 72-68 win over Sidwell to move to 13-1 on the year.

Winkey poured in 32 points, shooting 64 percent from the field while knocking down five 3-pointers. She was tremendous at the free throw line too, going 13-for-16 at the charity stripe.

Winkey also had three steals, which was critical to overcoming Sidwell Friends’ massive 40-14 rebounding advantage.

Scottie Hull’s 18 points — 16 of which came on a 4-for-6 night beyond the arc — also played a big role for the Saints while sophomore Daija Bennett had 10 points. Kymora Johnson had a team-high four boards and also snagged two steals.

The Saints minimized turnovers with just three on the night, which helped offset Sidwell Friends’ rebounding led by freshman Kiki Rice grabbing 14 boards. Rice scored 21 points and also had six assists, two steals and two blocks. Nalani Lyde had 15 points and 15 rebounds for Sidwell.

STAB faces a big LIS clash on the road Tuesday against Trinity Episcopal.
